A summer sea like a fairy tale

On a daily basis, I struggle to find a way to establish my own personal style and create a look that I feel happy showing to the world. It's hard when you're constantly comparing yourself to the stylish girls you'll inevitably encounter on a day out in the city, but once in awhile I do manage to put together a perfect outfit, get my hair just the way I want it, and feel like I'm all that and a bag of chips as I walk out the door. However, this is only once in awhile. So what does a style-challenged girl like me know about running a fashion and style blog?

Well, nothing really. I do not claim to be any sort of authority on the latest trends on the runways or the city streets, nor do I have extensive knowledge of designers or the fashion business. I watch Fashion Television with Jeanne Beker at breakfast, I scramble to watch each week's new episode of Canada's Next Top Model (which is four episodes into Cycle 3 as of this writing), and over the past year I've become a wee bit of a shopaholic, particularly when it comes to jewelry. These things do not make me an expert on clothes, accessories, or any aspect of that industry. But where I lack knowledge, I make up for it with interest.

Fashion is not my number one passion in life, no. I'm a music nerd, constantly blogging about my favourite musical acts and practicing my own singing, longing to be up on stage myself. But these days I spend more and more time thinking about my wardrobe and how I'm dressed, and looking at clothes and accessories both at the mall and online. I've always loved cute, girly, and sparkly things - with the exception of that all-black phase when I was fourteen - and of late that has manifested itself into a growing collection of Hello Kitty merchandise and a habit of wearing fake nails with flowery designs, or even jewels on occasion. I am a girly girl and a city girl, and I love to get my nails done, put on a brand new outfit, and strut my stuff downtown. That said, I spend most of my days going to school in jeans, a t-shirt and a Wal Mart hoodie (though the jeans are Parasuco and five times more expensive than the hoodie; I suppose they balance each other out!). I long to become one of those girls who effortlessly looks perfect on a daily basis, but for now all I can do is try.

That trying is a part of why I've started this blog. The other reason is because I'm basically a blog whore by this point; if I can start a blog about it, I will. My currently active blogs include one on Asian music, one that features media of those same Asian music stars with much less text, a worship blog for AKB48 member Hirajima Natsumi, a blog on books, television, movies and Western music, and my personal LiveJournal. As if that wasn't enough, there's at least one other one that I've been meaning to start updating again (a blog on my experiences as a Caucasian fan of Asian pop culture). Since style has officially become one of my addictions, why not give myself a space to blog about it? And so, here we are. If you're reading this, please bear with me. I only half know what I'm talking about with this stuff (if that much), but I want to talk about the clothes, accessories, and maybe even makeup that I love, and perhaps seek advice on how to further develop my personal style.

With that, welcome to Meruhentic! The title is a Japanese slang word that roughly means "fairy tale-like", combining "meruhen" for "fairy tale" (which I believe comes from the German word "marchen"), and the suffix "-tic". I know the word from the chorus of a summery little Jpop song called "Chu! Natsu Party" by 3nin Matsuri, featuring the line, "The summer sea is fairy tale-like." I love the idea of fairy tales, princesses and fairies, and while this doesn't necessarily come through in the clothes I wear, I do own a tiara. In any case, it seemed the perfect title for my own style blog. As for the picture at the beginning of this entry, that's Morning Musume's Kusumi Koharu, who I think is looking very stylish in this picture!

I hope you'll enjoy my pictures of and thoughts on fashion and style. I may be a novice, but I'm girly, easily excitable, and habitually obsessive. These qualities will no doubt make this blog a fun and mildly insane place. Pleasure to make your acquaintance!
